Wincenty Poziomka, an unfulfilled artist who makes a living writing love letters for cooks, is bequeathed half a grocery store by his uncle on the condition that he take care of three-year-old Basieńka, his uncle’s granddaughter. Dreaming of an acting career, Wincenty runs the store with artistic panache, almost driving it into bankruptcy. Wincenty loves the notary’s assistant, the lovely Miss Helenka, but he doesn’t have the courage to confess his love to her, because he knows he won’t be able to support his family. He wants to make money using his acting talent and applies for his dream job in the theater. Meanwhile, Helenka loses her job, so Wincenty offers her a position in a store. Thanks to the patronage of a neighbor – a well-known artist Krupkowski – Wincenty gets the opportunity to make his stage debut, which, turns out to be a total flop. The store is saved thanks to the unexpected film career of little Basieńka. Finally, Helenka and Wincenty profess their love for each other and from now on they can run the store together and take care of Basieńka.
