In Zakopane, as in other parts of Poland during the partitions, people awaited the opportunity to declare independence. On October 13, 1918, a civic assembly was held; its five hundred participants chose a 32-member committee, headed by the writer Stefan Żeromski. On October 31, one day ahead of Kraków, Zakopane declared independence.
