Warsaw, 1920. Young Ola, a talented actress in variety theater, is the fiancé of Jan, a left leaning poet and flamboyant cavalryman. After receiving orders to leave for the front, Jan i proposes to Ola, and they decide to marry immediately. The marriage takes place in Saint Anna’s Church with young Father Ignacy Skorupka presiding. The powerful Red Army approached, marching westward to conquer the continent. During the fighting, Jan is accused of communist sympathies and Bolshevik agitation. He is court martialed and sentenced to death. Meanwhile, in the theater, Ola is being harassed by her ardent admirer, military police Captain Kostrzewa. Ola then enters the Women’s Auxiliary Legion to serve as a nurse and prepares to defend Warsaw. She still hope to find her husband who has vanished.

 

JERZY HOFFMAN

Born in 1932 in Krakow. Film director and screenwriter. Graduated form Moscow Film Institute in 1955. He made his debut film in 1954 with a short documentary Are You among Them? (Czy jesteś wśród nich?). Made 26 documentary films, awarded in Oberhausen, Krakow, Brussels, Moscow, Venice, Mannheim. Recipient of numerous international awards. In 1975 his film Deluge was nominated for an Oscar in the Foreign Language Film Category.
